Cold Sores

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are a group of tiny blisters that appear around the lips. They’re a common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). They usually heal within three weeks and don’t leave a scar.

Causes

People contract the herpes simplex virus after coming into contact with other infected individuals or things that are carrying it. Patients often get it from sharing towels, utensils, or razors.

There are two types of virus involved in cold sores: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both types can cause genital sores and can spread by oral sex.

A cold sore outbreak can be triggered by:

  • Certain foods
  • Fever
  • Colds
  • Stress
  • Allergies
  • Fatigue
  • Dental work
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Menstruation

Symptoms

Cold sores usually show up near the lips but people can also get them on their cheeks and nose. They appear in the following stages:

  • You’ll have a burning, tingling, or itching feeling near the mouth
  • In about 12 to 24, you’ll notice red, painful blisters
  • The blisters will break (last 2 – 3 days)
  • A scab forms
  • The scab falls off

If this is your first infection, you may also experience:

  • Sore throat
  • Pain
  • A burning sensation inside your mouth
  • An upset stomach
  • Headache

Prevention

You can lower your risk of contracting cold sores by:

  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Wearing a lip balm with SPF
  • Talking with a doctor if you get them often

Treatment

There’s no medical cure for cold sores except prevention. Once you catch the virus, it stays until the sores heal.

Antiviral medicines can be used but you must consult a medical professional before using them.

Here are some home remedies that can help:

  • Cold compresses
  • Over-the-counter pain killers
  • Cream painkillers
  • Lip balms
