What Is Genital Herpes?
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection prevalent in the U.S. and is highly contagious. Those with genital herpes can develop blisters on their genital area. These blisters are painful and can be on or inside the anus. The infections can clear up and return a few months or years later.
The herpes simplex virus causes genital herpes. This virus spreads via vaginal, oral, and anal sex. Another mode of transfer is by kissing or close contact with someone with open sores.
What Are the Different Types of Herpes Virus?
There are two types of the herpes virus that can cause genital herpes. These include:
- HSV-1usually results in fever blisters or cold sores around the mouth. This virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact and to the genital areas via oral sex. However, with HSV-1, the probability of recurrences is lesser frequent as compared to HSV-2 infection.
- HSV-2 is the one that causes genital herpes. The HSV-2 virus is transferred via skin-to-skin and sexual contact. HSV-2 is highly contagious even if you don’t have open sores.
What’s important to note is that this virus quickly dies outside of the body. This is why it’s almost impossible to become infected via contact with towels, toilets, or any other object that an infected person uses.
